FNAI COMMUNITY: Hydric Hammock
STAGE DESCRIPTION
- Overstory:. Closed canopy forest, dominated by a variety of mature deciduous and evergreen hardwood trees. Tree species such as red maple, laurel oak, water oak, sweet gum and swamp ash tend to be dominants. Mockernut and pignut hickory, hackberry, yellow-poplar and cabbage palm are also common.
- Mid Story: This structural layer is sparser than that of the overstory and is dominated by sapling or larger size classes of similar tree species found in the overstory. Smaller hardwood tree and shrub species such as ironwood, basswood, black willow, button-bush, swamp dogwood and cabbage palm are common.
- Ground Cover: Very sparse herbaceous grass cover with other species such as American beauty-berry, green-briar, sparse saw palmetto and sprouting cabbage palm. On wetter sites species such as arrowhead, pickerel-weed, lizard's-tail, royal and cinnamon fern are common.
- Duff/Litter Layer: Primarily hardwood leaf litter and dead downed woody twigs and larger limbs.
