- Special Management Concerns:
- When mechanically treating a site, soil disturbance must be considered. Too much disturbance will lead to a reduction in saw palmetto and therefore a reduction in the ability for fire to carry. Soil disturbance should be avoided as much as possible.
- When conducting prescribed burns, the fires must be at the right intensity for highest efficiency. Low intensity fires will not reduce the oak enough. Usually the hotter the fire the better. Yet extremely high intensity fires will sterilize the soil and may allow for the invasion of native weedy species such as dog fennel.
- When restoring tall scrub back to optimal scrub, it is important to conduct those restoration activities (mechanical treatments and burning) throughout the majority of the scrub site when possible. Leaving a large area of tall scrub adjacent to the restored area reduces the survival of the Florida scrub-jay (Breininger et al., 1999).
