RANKS:

G2/S2: imperiled globally and in Florida.

RANK REASONS:

Imperiled because of rarity or because of vulnerability to extinction due to some natural or human-made factor. Plant is endemic to Florida.

LEGAL STATUS:

  • US--none
  • FL--Endangered

HABITAT:

Spreading pinweed: scrub and scrubby flatwoods.  Lakela's pinweed: coastal strand.

BEST SURVEY SEASON:

Flowers May to October.

RANGE-WIDE DISTRIBUTION:

Spreading pinweed: endemic to peninsular FL. Lakela's pinweed: endemic to Collier County.

CONSERVATION STATUS:

Spreading pinweed occurs on 16 conservation areas. Lakela's pinweed may be extirpated.

PROTECTION AND MANAGEMENT:

Apply prescribed fire to maintain a mosaic of habitats and sandy openings. Purchase and protect scrub sites on Lake Wales and Atlantic Coastal Ridge.
