TRAIL NEWS

EXPLORE THREE NATURE TRAILS within the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in Brevard’s south beaches designed to take advantage of the existing bicycle path along A1A. One is a mountain bike trail connecting Long Point Park and the Sebastian Inlet State Recreation Area. The other two are foot-traffic only trails in the EEL Program’s Coconut Point and Maritime Hammock Sanctuaries-both constructed through volunteer efforts including Brevard Community College staff, Florida Institute of Technology students, AmeriCorps, EEL Program volunteers, and Eagle Scouts

The 55-acre Coconut Point Sanctuary is 6-miles south of the Melbourne Causeway and just south of Driftwood Plaza shopping center on A1A. The 3/4-mile foot-traffic only loop trail offers views of dune, coastal strand, maritime hammock and tidal swamp habitats-home to gopher tortoises, indigo snakes, scrub jays and over 100 native plant species. The trail features a bike rack at the entrance, raised boardwalk sections, kiosks, and an Indian River Lagoon overlook.

The 120-acre Maritime Hammock Sanctuary is located 9-miles south of the Melbourne Causeway and .6-miles north of the Floridana Beach traffic light on A1A. The 2-mile foot-traffic only loop trail winds through coastal strand, maritime hammock and tidal swamp habitats-home to gopher tortoises, bobcats, songbirds and wading birds. Features include a bike rack at the entrance, raised boardwalk sections, bridges, kiosks, and a wetland pond overlook for bird viewing.
