The purpose of this site visit is to evaluate the ecological resource values of lands under consideration for public acquisition and management by the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program.

Any questions regarding this meeting should be directed to Jenny Ashbury, EEL Program at 321.255.4466 or jenny.ashbury@brevardparks.com

Saturday, 20 March, 2010 - Field Trip to Helen and Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary

Coconut Point Sanctuary. This is a joint acquisition of the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program and the State of Florida, acquired in 1994. Vegetation is coastal strand, coastal scrub, some hammocks, and wetlands along the Indian River Lagoon. The first prescribed was conducted in 1999. Much of the site burned in a wildfire in March 2006 and in a prescribed burn in April 2007. Recovery has been rapid and quite impressive.

Saturday, March 20 from 9 a.m. till noon

DIRECTIONS: I-95 to St. Rt. 192 . East on SR 192 to A1A. South on A1A about 5.8 miles. Park at Ponce de Leon County Park on the east side of A1A, cross A1A and walk a short distance north to the kiosk at the north end of the loop trail.

Please wear closed toe shoes and sunscreen and bring your water bottle, a snack and insect repellant. Binoculars and cameras are optional.


Saturday, 20 March, 2010 - 'SPRING FEVER' SCAVENGER HIKE at the Barrier Island Center

Celebrate the first day of Spring with a 1-mile hike on the Barrier Island Sanctuary Trail to explore, discover and photograph or sketch a list of what's in bloom from dune to lagoon!

Please wear water shoes and sunscreen and bring your camera or sketchbook, water bottle and a snack.

The adventure begins with a sunset paddle through the Mullet Creek Islands Preserve. Next, enjoy colorful skies, exploring and star gazing while a gourmet dinner is prepared for you!

Saturday, March 27 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Meet at 4:45 p.m.: Aquarina Country Club, 7500 South Highway A1A, Melbourne Beach to enter security gate together.

Please wear water shoes and sunscreen and bring your water bottle, a snack and insect repellant. Binoculars and cameras are optional.

Cost of kayak rental and dinner is $50 per person. Dinner choices are vegetarian, salmon or chicken. Tandem touring kayaks available or singles for individuals. Children under 12 must paddle tandem with an adult.

Enrollment is limited to 20 people/10 kayaks.
