EEL FIRE MANAGEMENT MANUAL

Prepared by The Nature Conservancy

Natural Community—Cabbage Palm Hammock (Stage 1)

FUEL MODEL:

Either Fuel Model 9 or 12 could represent the fire behavior of this stage.  Model 9 is best suited for moderate palm thatch fuel loading.  Model 12 for long unburned sites with heavy palm thatch and significant dead downed woody debris (Anderson, 1982).

TYPICAL FIRE BEHAVIOR:

[Using FBPS: FM 9/12, FFM 8, LFM 100, MFW 5 - 10] (Refer to page 32)

Data Table

Note:  Cabbage Palm thatch, fronds and boot debris are excellent brands with good lofting potential and frequently cause spotting at considerable distances.

DESIRED STAGE:

This single stage community is in the condition at which cabbage palm hammock communities are to be maintained.

RESTORATION/MANAGEMENT PROTOCOL:

  • Restoration Phase:
    • No restoration required.
  • Maintenance/Management Phase:
    • Mixed season, low intensity, surface fuel spreading, prescribed fires under moderate moisture conditions.
  • Special Management Concerns:
    • Spotting during prescribed fires to brands produced from burning palm thatch.
    • Avoid hydrologic/topographic alteration such as ditching and fire-plow scars.
