EEL FIRE MANAGEMENT MANUAL

Prepared by The Nature Conservancy

  Natural Community—Oak Scrub (Stage 3)

    • Land managers should consider several structural features of scrub when determining the burning objectives for a site, such as height, openings, and pine cover (Breininger et al., in press).
    • Mechanical maintenance may be needed depending on the amount and height of oak scrub trees (Breininger et al., 1999).
  • Maintenance/Management Phase:
    • The community should be maintained at Stage 2 conditions, once achieved.
The landscape surrounding oak scrub should be burned more frequently (about every 2-3 years) than oak scrub.  These fires should be allowed to burn into the scrub (Breininger et al., 1999).
    • Extremely intense fires in patches may be needed at times to sterilize the soils and create sandy openings.
  • Special Management Concerns:
    • Fires in Stage 3 oak scrub may be very intense and lead to risky burning conditions. Extra caution should be taken when conducting prescribed burns.
    • Exotic or native weedy species are high potential in Stage 3, such as Brazilian pepper, grape vines, and dog fennel.
