Without frequent fires, the shrubs will outcompete the herbs and dominate the ground layer.  Eventually, hardwood trees would enter and eliminate the ground cover with its dense canopy.  With an increase in understory comes an increase in fire intensity and may lead to a stand replacing fire (Florida Natural Areas Inventory, 1990).
