The purpose of this meeting is to review policies and procedures for land acquisition conducted under the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program.

Any questions regarding this meeting should be directed to Laura Clark at 321.255.4466 or Laura.Clark@brevardparks.com.

If a person desires to appeal any decision made by this board, agency or commission with respect to any matter considered at this meeting or hearing, such a person will need a record of this proceeding and that, for such purposes, such person may need to ensure that a verbatim record of this proceeding is made, at his/her own expense, which record includes testimony and evidence upon which any such appeal is to be based.

The purpose of this site visit is to evaluate the ecological resource values of lands under consideration for public acquisition and management by the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program.

Sanctuaries...

Lands purchased and managed by the EEL Program are called Sanctuaries or Conservation Areas.

These lands are organized by management Regions: North, Central, South, and South Beaches. Each Region features a premier site where a Management and Education Center either is now located or will be constructed --

Management & Education Centers (or future Centers)

Enchanted Forest Sanctuary - North Region (Center)
Pine Island Conservation Area - Central Region
Malabar Scrub Sanctuary - South Region
Barrier Island Sanctuary - South Beaches Region (Center)

These lands serve three main functions:

To conserve natural resources and biological diversity
To offer environmental education opportunities
To make available passive recreation opportunities that do not impact the natural resources

The purpose of an EEL sanctuary is to provide:

A protected area for plants and animals
A place to learn about Brevard's unique natural areas
A place of wonder, study, and discovery
A place to experience the real Florida
A source of community identity

The EEL Program is committed to providing the public with opportunities to enjoy the beauty of Brevard's natural areas. The best way to protect a sanctuary and to provide public access to the site is to support passive recreation activities. These are activities that do not abuse the natural resources, biological diversity, or environmental qualities of a site.

Examples of passive recreation activities provided on EEL sanctuaries follow:

About the EEL Program

The Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program was established in 1990 to protect the natural habitats of Brevard County by acquiring environmentally sensitive lands for conservation, passive recreation, and environmental education.

This was made possible by citizens who voted to tax themselves up to $55 million dollars for the acquisition and maintenance of Brevard’s natural areas. Residents reaffirmed the EEL Program in 2004 under a second referendum to protect the natural habitats within Brevard County by the acquisition of environmentally sensitive lands through a willing seller program for the purpose of conservation, passive recreation, and environmental education.

To stretch these funds as far as possible, the EEL Program forms partnerships with federal, state and local agencies that are committed to the protection of natural resources and our long-term quality of life. EEL sanctuaries are managed to preserve native habitats and the plants and animals that live there.

The Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program acquires, protects and maintains environmentally endangered lands guided by scientific principles for conservation and the best available practices for resources, stewardship and ecosystem management.
The EEL Program protects the rich biological diversity of Brevard County for future generations.
The EEL Program provides passive recreation and environmental education opportunities to Brevard's citizens and visitors without detracting from the primary conservation goals of the program.
The EEL Program encourages active citizen participation and community involvement
